Boston.com – 30 Years and Counting

Our Mission:

Boston.com covers what Boston really cares about right now.

When news breaks, we’ll be the first to provide a clear, straightforward account. When we’re amused or inspired by a single moment, we’ll showcase its glory. When you don’t know what to do, we’ll provide the tools, guides, and advice to help you out. We’ll do this in the formats you enjoy and with the speed your modern life demands. We’ll make sure you’re always in touch with this corner of the world as you go through the day.

Our Story:

Boston.com was one of the first news websites on the public web, launched in October 1995 by Boston Globe Electronic Publishing Inc. The domain name was purchased from the café chain Au Bon Pain in exchange for newspaper advertisements for charities chosen by Au Bon Pain’s CEO.

Boston.com has covered a wide range of stories of interest to people in the region. It was the primary website of The Boston Globe until September 2011, when the Globe launched a subscription-only website. Boston.com has remained accessible to the community, rapidly publishing breaking news updates, pro sports coverage, lifestyle, and more.

Today, Boston.com operates as an independent digital newsroom as part of Boston Globe Media Partners, headquartered at 53 State St. in Boston, Massachusetts. Recent updates to the site include a fully redesigned digital experience and the launch of our popular Community section, where readers can weigh in on the top stories of the day.

In 2025, we’re celebrating our 30th anniversary with a campaign called, “Boston.com: 30 years and counting,” a tribute to our local journalism and a nod toward our future.
